AutoNumber Field Duplicates Previous Values After You Compact and Repair a Database

SYMPTOMS
After you compact and repair a database, you notice that when you enter new data, you notice the following error:

The changes you requested to the table were not successful because they would create duplicate values in the index, primary key, or relationship. Change the data in the field or fields that contain duplicate data, remove the index, or redefine the index to permit duplicate entries and try again.

RESOLUTION
Obtain Microsoft Jet 4.0 Service Pack 4 (SP4) or later, which contains an updated version of the Microsoft Jet 4.0 database engine.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Jet version 4.0.2927.4 and earlier.
